While Hollywood may be going through a lot of turmoil (see the MeToo movement), the movies that come out of it are as profitable and entertaining as ever. While movie franchises are nothing new, they have become more popular in recent years. There is more demand for sequels than ever – and as soon as a movie makes a profit, a studio will push for a second film. This is the list of the top ten franchises of all time in descending order:
10. Pirates of the Caribbean – Worldwide Gross: $4,505,103,091
It’s hard to believe that this franchise is based on a theme park ride but that is how Pirates of the Caribbean first started. There have been 6 films so far with a seventh on the way. There’s no sign of this franchise slowing down.
9. Batman – Worldwide Gross: $4,572,000,197
Batman (real name Bruce Wayne) first came to our big screens in 1989 when Michael Keaton played the character. There have been several different iterations of the character since then with eight live action movies over the years.
8. Spider-Man – Worldwide Gross: $4,858,770,389
Spider-Man is the most popular superhero ever. There has been six films, with the first being released in 2002. Currently Spider-Man is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and is portrayed by young Brit Tom Holland.
7. X-Men – Worldwide Gross: $5,016,911,347
The X-Men series was the first superhero cinematic universe. There are 10 films currently with more on the way. Although with Disney purchasing FOX, it could spell the end of this franchise.
6. Fast and Furious – Worldwide Gross: $5,139,434,105
What started off as a small budget racing movie has turned in to an all action movie franchise worth billions. Home to megastars such as Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel there has been 8 films so far, with more on the way.
5. Lord of the Rings – Worldwide Gross: $5,895,804,182
Frodo, Samwise, Gandalf and co. had three original films with the three Hobbit sequels coming later on. The first film was released in 2001. Amazon have now put a TV in to production for the series.
4. James Bond – Worldwide Gross: $7,077,929,291
This famous British spy has had 26!! Films over the years. It’s been played by seven different actors and shows no signs of slowing down. The next film is being directed by famous director Danny Boyle.
3. Harry Potter – Worldwide Gross: $8,532,684,345
If the books were popular, then the film series blew it out the water. The original series got bigger every film. There are now prequels using the Fantastic Beasts name.
2. Star Wars – Worldwide Gross: $8,926,689,927
9 films over 40 years that just keep getting bigger. Okay, the naughties prequel films were a bit of disaster but they have returned to form with the new films. The world has gone Star Wars crazy again.
1. Marvel Cinematic Universe – Worldwide Gross: $13,508,505,227 (Excluding Black Panther)
18 films. So many different characters. This superhero series of films have gone from strength to strength. With the latest film Black Panther becoming one of the biggest films ever, expect the MCU to get even better.
